Helping Prostate Cancer Patients Navigate from Diagnosis to Recovery
4th Burger Prostate Challenge Golf Tournament Funds Navigator
for Roper St. Francis

CHARLESTON, S.C. (Aug. 13, 2012)–Roper St. Francis Healthcare announced today that a new service will be available to patients being treated for prostate cancer thanks to proceeds from the annual Ken Burger Prostate Challenge. Roper St. Francis Cancer Care has acquired a nurse navigator who will assist patients and their families beginning this fall. The annual Ken Burger Prostate Challenge will provide ongoing funding for the position.

“The players and sponsors registering for our Sept. 20 tournament will know exactly what their contributions are supporting – a nurse navigator that will assist Roper St. Francis patients diagnosed with prostate cancer by leading them through the complexities of the process,” said Ken Burger, author, newspaper columnist and prostate cancer survivor. “Patient navigation has emerged as a key component to a multidisciplinary healthcare team, particularly in cancer. Navigators work closely with doctors and care givers to help guide patients and families through a new world of information, diagnostic and treatment regimens, and symptom management.”

The nurse navigator is an oncology certified registered nurse. “She will serve as an expert resource, providing a familiar face throughout treatment and recovery, allowing patients to focus their energy and efforts toward healing,” Burger said.

Prostate Cancer Awareness Month
September is National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month and Burger will again lead the charge to The Ocean Course at KiawahIsland for the popular event sponsored by Roper St. Francis Cancer Care. This year the tournament will be held Thurs., Sept. 20, 2012.

Burger, a cancer survivor himself, visits patients at Roper St. Francis hospitals. “It is thrilling to know that just by playing golf on one of the most beautiful courses in the world, we will so positively impact the lives of the men and their families that I meet while visiting cancer patients at the hospitals,” he said. “When you have cancer you have endless questions. Now they’ll have someone by their side to help get the answers.”
