Rising High Café Sprinkles Joy with Hoagies and Heroes Campaign

Rising High Café’s Hoagies and Heroes campaign has partnered with A Dog for Kate to bring Charleston “Kate’s Sprinkles Sammie” for the month of September.

The sandwich was created by Kate Hanchon, the 7-year-old inspiration behind A Dog for Kate and a sufferer of childhood Type I Diabetes. Ten percent of proceeds from the sandwich sales will benefit A Dog for Kate, an organization focused on helping to raise awareness of childhood diabetes and fundraising for children like Kate to receive a Diabetic Alert Dog.

“Kate’s Sprinkles Sammie” ingredients include: peanut butter and strawberry jelly toasted on cinnamon swirl bread and sprinkled with Good Luck Sprinkles! The sandwich is $8.00 and includes a side item and fountain drink. Additionally, Rising High Café customers will have the opportunity to directly donate to A Dog for Kate at the café throughout the month.

“Kate was a really independent kid who would walk into a crowd and not feel nervous. With the diagnosis, she suddenly felt different from everybody else; she’s afraid she’ll tell somebody that she doesn’t feel well and they won’t hear her or believe her. Twenty minutes could be life threatening to her,” said Tanya Hanchon, Kate’s mother and the driving force behind A Dog for Kate. “In just the first week of having Sprinkels, her new alert dog, Kate’s whole life has changed. Sprinkels started alerting 30 minutes after arriving at our house.”

The next fundraising goal for A Dog for Kate is for a 16-year-old boy named Luke from Wando High School to receive a Diabetic Alert Dog. Luke is a fisherman and loves to be on the water, but extensive exercise creates low blood sugar, which makes it dangerous for him to be by himself while fishing.

“In Charleston, we only know of one Diabetic Alert Dog – Sprinkels,” said Hanchon. “This is right on the cutting edge and hopefully beginning push of what will be an amazing adventure for alert dogs. The University of Virginia has just started research – putting data to what these dogs really do. As there is more science to back it up, we hope more people will start believing in it.”

Each month a local charity will select a spokesperson to build a sandwich on their behalf with a portion of the proceeds from the sandwich sales going back to the organization. The October sandwich for the Hoagies and Heroes campaign will be created on behalf of Lowcountry Local First.

“As a local business, we feel that it’s important to be a part of the Charleston community,” said Cliff Lowder, owner of Rising High Café. “We’re really excited about this campaign because giving back is an essential part of our philosophy. And, we get to do it by doing what we do best – making great food!”
