Roper St. Francis Welcomes the Mother of Ryan White

WHAT:   Roper St. Francis Ryan White Program and Long’s Pharmacy welcome special guest speaker, Jeanne White Ginder, the mother of Ryan White.  She will be speaking on her son’s legacy and answering questions.

WHEN:  Friday, August 24 at the Riviera Theatre — 225 King Street, downtown Charleston. 

Admittance is free! Event is from 2 - 4 p.m.

Parking is available at the Majestic Square Garage (behind Forever 21) or at the Wentworth Street Public Garage.

BACKGROUND: Ryan White was diagnosed with AIDS at age 13. Ryan White and his mom, Jeanne White Ginder, courageously fought AIDS-related discrimination and helped educate the nation about his disease. They fought for his right to attend school, gaining international attention as a voice of reason about HIV/AIDS. At the age of 18, Ryan White died just months before Congress passed the AIDS bill that bears his name – the Ryan White CARE (Comprehensive AIDS Resources Emergency) Act. The legislation has been reauthorized four times since – and is now called the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program.

The Ryan White Program works with cities, states, and local community-based organization to provide HIV-related services to more than half a million people each year.

The Roper St. Francis Ryan White Program recently expanded and opened a comprehensive HIV clinic, now dubbed ‘The Wellness Center’. The name reflects our commitment to a holistic approach to wellness, as well as helping to ensure that clients feel comfortable about receiving care in a discrete, welcoming environment that does not identify as an ‘HIV clinic’.
