Summer Arts Camps offered in North Charleston

Space is still available for kids, ages 5 to 13, to participate in Summer Arts Camps sponsored by the City of North Charleston’s Cultural Arts Department. Instruction is offered in visual arts, theatre, and African drum and dance, by local arts professionals. All camps take place at Sterett Hall on the former Charleston Naval Base from 9:00am to 12:00pm, with mid-morning snacks provided.  Registration is required and space is limited. Registration ends one week prior to the start of each camp. Registration forms are available for download from the Applications & Registration Forms page of the Cultural Arts Department section of the City’s website at www.northcharleston.org.

Visual Arts Camp II, for children ages 9 to 13, will take place June 11-15 under the direction of the city’s Artist-in-Residence, Lori Starnes Isom. Students will receive instruction in a variety of visual art media.  This is a good opportunity to strengthen art portfolios for the more serious student; however, all skill levels are welcome. The fee for this one week camp is $50.

Drama Camp II, also offered for 9 to 13 year olds, will be under the instruction of local actor, storyteller, and filmmaker, Julian Gooding.  This camp gives students the opportunity to learn intensive drama skills in a two week performance workshop format. Participants will focus on creating and presenting a performance for parents and the community at the end of the camp. Camp dates are July 9-20 and the fee is $100.

Rajeeyah Mujahid with RBM African Drum & Dance Company will instruct African Drum & Dance Camp from July 23-27. Children ages 5 to 13 are welcome to participate.  Students will learn rhythms and techniques of drumming and dance from West African influences.  This is a positive way to channel all the energy your child can muster while learning about a beautiful and historic cultural art form. An informal performance for family and friends at the conclusion of camp will showcase the skills learned. The fee for this one week camp is $50.
