Shares for fall season of Charleston Supported Art delivered November 5

Charleston Supported Art, LLC, is preparing to reveal its third and final round of artwork for 2015. Offering seasonal collections of art, known as shares, for purchase based on the community supported agriculture model, the group has established an easy, affordable, and fun way for art lovers to begin or add to their personal art collections. Individual shares are priced at just $425 (plus tax), and consist of four original pieces of artwork produced by a curated group of local, established and emerging artists working in a variety of media. Charleston Supported Art (CSA) shares are limited and delivered through exclusive pick-up events for each season. The spring and summer share pick-up events were held earlier this year at The Faculty Lounge and Mixson Bath & Racquet Club, respectively. The next pick-up event, dedicated to the fall season, takes place on Thursday, November 5, from 5:30-7:30pm at Blue Ion in Downtown Charleston. Shares may be purchased on site or ahead of the event at charlestonsupportedart.com.

CSA’s fall season features works by Jordan Fowler, Nina Garner, Lisa Shimko, and Alex Waggoner. The four artists will be present at the November 5 pick-up event and will speak briefly about the 32 pieces of original artwork they each created specifically for and exclusive to Charleston Supported Art beginning at 6:30pm. The pick-up event, open to the public, will be the first time these works will be revealed. The pieces, which include metal sculpture, 3-D mixed media, and paintings will not be available for purchase anywhere else.

About CSA’s Fall Artists
Jordan Fowler
is a South Carolina native from Rock Hill. He currently resides in Charleston and is finishing is last year at the College of Charleston with a double major in Studio Art and Computing in the Arts. Jordan is also employed at the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art as a preparator’s assistant. His work is a sculptural exploration of abstract form with steel. Mainly composed of geometric and planer elements that revolve and intersect, his pieces sometimes resembles architecture or figurative poses. He is heavily influenced by naturally occurring geometry on both micro and macro scales. When exploring form, he likes to apply laws that mimic those found in nature in order to provide a framework for interesting direction. Influences for his work range from sculptors of the Constructivist era to the experimental architecture of artists like Lebbeus Woods.

Inspired by 19th century portrait photography, Nina Garner’s work encompasses various techniques and materials to create compositions that glorify moments in time, the beauty in nature, and people.  Using film photography, her photographs transport the viewer to another time and place by bonding the everyday and the exotic. Nina grew up in various parts of the United States and Okinawa, Japan. In May of 2009 she graduated with a B.A from the College of Charleston in Charleston, SC, where she currently lives with her husband and two dogs.

Lisa M. Shimko enjoyed her childhood in York County, PA, where she spent most of her time collecting rocks and exploring the terrain of forests and farms. Colors, forms, and textures from nature and the simple designs of Pennsylvania German folk art infused the foundation of her artistic aesthetic. In 1990, she earned a BFA in Painting with a minor in Art Therapy from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. The urban landscapes of the Northeast supplied a different kind of nature for her to explore, from architecture, social issues to history and all the music in between. Hilton Head Island became Lisa’s home in 2000 where the terrain of the coastal south added a new chapter to her aesthetic book. Lisa’s paintings in the past few years have been imbued with an allegorical curiosity. Animals are the common subject, and the painter uses them symbolically to create a visual language of storytelling. She has a personal mantra that “absurdity shocks you into freedom,” and takes pleasure in letting the irrational nature of daydreaming be the guide. She has called Charleston her home since 2006, where she creates in her downtown studio and shows her work at Michael Mitchell Gallery.

Alex Waggoner received her BFA in Painting and Printmaking from Savannah College of Art and Design in 2012. Her paintings come from observations of landscape and architecture, but more so from the spaces in-between. She focuses on the forgotten pile of bricks, or the way you can only see through a fence at just the right angle. She paints on wood panel to connect these observations to the structures they reference, and uses vivid colors with varying amounts of sheen and sparkle to make these looked-over spaces command attention.
