Southern Women’s Show showcasing local nonprofits during inaugural event

The Southern Women’s Show is coming to Charleston in September, bringing with it three days of fashion, food and fun. The show will be putting the spotlight on several local charitable organizations, including the Center for Women, the Junior League of Charleston, the League of Women Voters of South Carolina, the Lowcountry Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure and Pet Helpers. Show attendees will be able to interact with these nonprofits to learn more about what they do in the community.

“These partnerships are definitely a really great fit for us,” said Laura Campbell, national sponsorship director at Southern Shows Inc., the Charlotte-based company that brings the show to cities around the Southeast. “Our show is fun, festive and entertaining, but we also strive to ensure it is educational and beneficial to women. We are passionate about showcasing and supporting local causes like these.”

The Southern Women’s Show will host their very first show in the Lowcountry — and in South Carolina — from September 23 to 25 at the Charleston Area Convention Center. In conjunction with the event’s Friday start-date, the Center for Women will host an “Influential Women in Business” breakfast at 7:30 a.m. before the event doors open.

The Center for Women is a local nonprofit that serves to help educate and advocate so that women in South Carolina have economic success and are leaders in their professional, community and personal lives. The “Influential Women in Business” breakfast will showcase successful women that the organization serves.

“This breakfast will offer our clients another opportunity to connect for success. We are grateful to Southern Women’s Show for their help in raising awareness for our organization,” shared Leigh Ann Garrett, event and program manager. “There’s a natural synergy between the Center for Women and the Southern Women’s Show and we look forward to this being an ongoing relationship.“

The Southern Women’s Show has agreed to a collaborative partnership with Komen Lowcountry. The two will work closely together to offer special giveaways and discounts throughout the summer to both help spread the word about the show and encourage people to support Komen Lowcountry. They also plan on hosting special events for Komen Lowcountry specifically throughout their September show.

“We will hopefully be able to reach women that we may not have been able to reach before,” said Lisa Jones, marketing and events manager at Komen. “Everything we do is in support of our mission and our fight against breast cancer in the Lowcountry, and Southern Women’s Show has shown us incredible support and understanding throughout this entire process.”

Pet Helpers, a local animal rescue organization in Charleston, has also agreed to come on board the show’s growing list of nonprofits. They will host a Fido Fashion Show to help showcase pets that are available for adoption. The event will be held in conjunction with fashion shows offered during the show highlighting local models and retailers.

“The Fido Fashion Show is a fun, cute way to get the word out about Pet Helpers and the work they are doing with rescue animals in our community,” said Campbell.

The first no-kill shelter in the Lowcountry, Pet Helpers strives to help end euthanasia of all adoptable cats and dogs by keeping all animals until adopted, providing low cost surgeries, offering humane education programs, pursuing animal cruelty prosecution and initiating animal welfare legislation.

The League of Women Voters of South Carolina will also join the show in September to help assist eligible citizens in registering to vote, updating their records and encouraging them to prepare for the upcoming elections.

“The League of Women Voters has spent the last 96 years working to register eligible voters, providing voter information and making democracy work,” said Julie Hussey, president of the League of Women Voters of South Carolina. “While this election marks a milestone for women, this election, like every election, offers an opportunity for both women and men to advocate for the issues and leadership that match their priorities. We look forward to being a part of the Southern Women’s Show and reminding the attendees about the power and importance of their vote.”

The Junior League of Charleston (JLC) will also have exposure during the Southern Women’s Show expanding on the show’s long-standing relationship with the Junior Leagues in other host cities.

“The Southern Women’s Show offers us a chance to interact with our community, share our historical cookbook and tell people about the amazing work we do alongside our fellow nonprofits in the fight against hunger and homelessness in Charleston,” said Elizabeth Burwell, JLC president. “We can also meet women who may want to develop their own potential and join us in these efforts as a member.”

Backed by a membership of nearly 1,000 women, JLC is an organization of trained volunteers that provides volunteer and financial support to its community partners. Additionally, women develop their own skills through hands-on opportunities in our community and skill-based trainings of running a major nonprofit.

“While the Southern Women’s Show has a long history of bringing charitable organizations into our show, we are especially excited about our debut in Charleston and meeting the women behind these incredible organizations,” says Stacy Abernethy, the executive show manager for both the Nashville and Charleston shows. “Our inaugural event in Charleston is gearing up to live up to Charleston’s reputation of being one of the top locations in the world. We can see why there is so much to showcase.”

More than 300 exhibitors and celebrity guests will also be involved with the show.
