Maersk to remain in Charleston through 2014

Maersk Line, the Danish company that accounts for about 20 percent of the State Ports Authority's container business, on Thursday announced its decision to remain in Charleston for at least the next five years.

Read more stories on this subject in our Maersk topic page.The deal ends a pull-out threat that has hung over the port since December and wraps up almost a year of negotiations that hinged on labor costs. Maersk relocated parts of its Charleston-based services to other ports in 2009 after the three local unions voted against a change in Maersk's contract late last year.

This deal apparently maintains the labor status quo, and is being celebrated all along the waterfront.
