Targeting the area generally north of the Crosstown and in the general vicinity of Joe Riley Stadium, a $155 million project would bring a more urban environment to much of the peninsula's wester portion.

The project is backed by the Medical University of South Carolina and South Carolina Research Authority, and the groups are seeding the development with facilities to encourage biomedical research.

Dubbed the "Horizon Redevelopment Project" the project will be discussed by Charleston City Council on Tuesday, December 9, and possibly again for final approval the following Tuesday, December 16.

Update December 11: The Charleston Regional Business Journal has added a good story on the development.

Most interestingly, they point out that the concept has been on city plans since 1998.
