Charleston local dies while on patrol in Baghdad

Army Staff Sgt. Matthew Joseph Taylor, and Charleston local, has died in Baghdad from "small arms fire wounds suffered while on patrol" on Sunday, September 21.

The 25-year-old had enlisted in the Army in November 2001 and was on his 3rd tour of duty. He is survived by his wife, Randi Taylor, and three children who are living in the Goose Creek area.

As of this morning the total count for South Carolina military personnel that have died in Iraq and Afghanistan operation is 64. A total 4,170 members of the U.S. military have died.

July and August have had 22 and 17 deaths, two of the lowest months on record.
