A roof collapsed on a downtown building Sunday night, just after 10 p.m., a sign of record rainfall over the weekend. The building, at 694 Meeting St. at Romney, is the headquarters of J.K. Construction. Investigators are still examining the cause, but it's expected that it was just heavy rainfall that was too much for the roof to take.

The Weather Service recorded 1.87 inches of rain at Waterfront Park on Friday, another 1.80 inches on Saturday and .59 of an inch on Sunday. That gave downtown Charleston a combined 4.26 inches. Saturday's total broke the previous record of 1.03 inches set in 1976.

Less than 10 miles to the north, around Charleston International Airport, only a half inch or so of rain fell on Friday and Saturday combined, Mohlin said.

This morning, workers at J.K. Construction on Meeting and Romney streets had already started cleaning debris from the roof that collapsed the night before. The ceiling crunched two work trucks and tools in the garage, though the general contractor's adjacent front office was still in use. The mishap occurred around 10 p.m., said Roy Owens, whose brother Randolph Owens owns the business.
