Mount Pleasant has decided to follow in stride behind Charleston, Goose Creek and Summerville and is developing a plan as part of its application process to receive a bicycle-friendly designation from the League of American Bicyclists.

The process to apply is a yearlong endeavor, and the League of American Bicyclists rates communities based on five criteria: engineering, education, encouragement, enforcement and evaluation. To date, Greenville, Spartanburg and Columbia have all received bronze designations in the engineering category.

A committe on Sullivan's Island has already formed to apply for the designation and there are plenty of grand plans in the pipe. The town plans to improve bicycle and pedestrian paths on the Ben Sawyer Causeway, create bike lanes on Mount Pleasant roads and the newly expanded portions of Highway 17, and encouraging people to car pool, walk, or bike to work whenever the opportunity arises.

The benefits of the designation are more than just recognition by the League. They would also promote and advocate for the town and offer expert advice on making the area an even more bicycle friendly place to live.
