Enterprise Road closure for construction in Myrtle Beach delayed another year

The closure of Enterprise Road from east of Butler Road to west of Hunters Horn Lane to build a bridge to accommodate the extension of S.C. 31 has been delayed for about another year.

Mike Barbee, project manager with the S.C. Department of Transportation, told the Horry County Council at its meeting Tuesday that the delay is simply a maneuver in the construction plan and should not alter the spring 2017 projected completion date of the S.C. 31 project.

“The contractor wants to keep Enterprise open because he’s going to concentrate more of his efforts of hauling earthwork in to the southern portion from Enterprise to [S.C.] 707 instead of using 707 because there’s a lot less traffic,” Barbee said. “Under the terms of the contract, and any contract for that matter, he has that latitude.”

The $237 million southern extension of S.C. 31 from S.C. 544 to near the Georgetown County line includes a bridge over Enterprise Road. Originally, Firestone, Colo.-based Flat Iron Corp., thought it would close Enterprise Road for nine months beginning in August, but that date was pushed to December.
