PUSH Physical Theatre Performs at CCU this Friday

PUSH Physical Theatre will bring together dance, acrobatics, theater and technology for its performance on Friday, Oct. 25, at 7:30 p.m. at Coastal Carolina University’s Wheelwright Auditorium. This event is presented by CCU’s Cultural Arts Program.

The group was founded to “push” the boundaries of traditional dance and theater by husband-and-wife team Darren and Heather Stevenson. Since 2000, this company from Rochester, N.Y., has performed in the U.S., England and Malta. It has been profiled on PBS and NPR. It also received the Anton Germano Dance Award from the “Community of Color” and the Artist of the Year Award from the Arts & Cultural Council of Greater Rochester.

PUSH Physical Theatre combines acrobatics and theatre into a genre of physical storytelling. Past performances have covered topics like Flight 1549’s heroic landing on the Hudson River and a reinterpretation of Dracula. For the CCU performance, the group combine dance-infused acrobatics with synchronized iPads to enhance their physical illusions.

PUSH Physical Theatre will also host a free performance for K-12 students of select Horry County Schools at Wheelwright Auditorium on Thursday, Oct. 24, at 10 a.m. This performance builds on the Cultural Arts Committee’s mission to make professional award-winning arts performances available to local school children and the wider community.

Tickets for the event range from $15 to $20 for general admission. CCU/HGTC students and children’s tickets (12 and under) are $5. Tickets for CCU/HGTC faculty and staff are $10. CCU/HGTC alumni, OLLI members, senior citizens and teens receive a $5 discount. Seating is limited and reserved.

Wheelwright Auditorium is located on the CCU campus at 108 Spadoni Park Circle.
