Horry County police unveiled Rescue 1 on Monday, the department’s first armored Caiman vehicle that will be available for rescues and hazardous transportation.

The 60,728 pound vehicle is a military surplus vehicle that came from Sealy, Texas and was obtained through a federal program administered by the S.C. Budget and Control Board, Horry County police Chief Saundra Rhodes said Monday.

With recent incidents in Ferguson, Mo., and New York City, Rhodes said she is aware of the militarization of police debates and “knowing that, we thought we should introduce it to the public.”

“We thought really long and hard before taking possession of one,” Rhodes said of the armored vehicle. “This is something to provide a service.”
