New flashing yellow traffic lights coming to S.C. roads

Drivers looking to make left hand turns in South Carolina will start to see not only red, yellow, and green turn lights, but flashing yellow as well.

The pulsating yellow will aim to caution motorists that they should yield to pedestrians and oncoming traffic.

S.C. DOT writes, "These left turn signal heads are designed to improve driver understanding of left-turn traffic signal displays. The goal is to improve efficiency and reduce crashes at signalized intersections."

On May 1 the first light will go up in Richland County, with some dozen more to follow this year.

You can see a graphic about how the new lights work below.
